Phellinus linteus (Sang Hwang)

Phellinus linteus is also known as Sang Hwang in China and Korea; and Meshima in Japan. It grows naturally on the trunks of willow, paper mulberry and elm trees that have potential lifetimes of more than 100 years. Perfect growth conditions for a minimum of 30 – 40 years is essential for the fruit body to gain its valuable medicinal applications. This is why natural Sang Hwang is exceedingly rare.

Sang Hwang has been described in Asian herbal medicine literature to have powerful immunomodulatory activity and enhance immune system function. It is also effective on a diversity of diseases, including improving blood circulation, preventing and treating cardiovascular disease; enhancing detoxication and protecting the liver; combating allergy and diabetes; curing oral ulcer and alleviating gastroenteric disorder or lymphatic diseases; reducing stress and tension. It has strong anti-tumor activity and inhibit the growth of existing tumors.
Phellinus linteus has been widely used in Japan, Korea and China. In 1993, Korea has succeeded in developing an anti-tumor medicine derived from Phellinus linteus.

  1. In 1968, the research team at the Japan Cancer Research Center examined and compared the anti-tumor rate of over 25 medicinal mushrooms in mice. Phellinus linteus was ranked No. 1 with an anti-tumor rate of 96.7%,while Phellinus igniarius was ranked No. 3 with an anti-tumor rate of 87.4%.
